The NET STOP and NET START Commands
The net.exe utility can beused to manage the any services running on a server, either locally or fromanother machine, providing that you have the relevant permissions. Although notrecommended for use with Internet services such as the WWWor FTP service, it is useful for stopping andstarting other services (in fact, the NET commandcan be used to issue a whole range of other network-related commands as well).
The syntax is net [start | stop] service_name
So, for example, we can use it to stop and start theMicrosoft Indexing Service with the commands:
net stopcisvc and net start cisvc. It can beused in a CMD-type #echoSSI directive providing that the page has anonymous access removed and the usersupplies details of a valid account that has Administratorprivileges on the target server.
A full list of all the options and switches for the NETcommand can be found in the Windows 2000 Help files. Select Help from the Start menu, and in the Index page of the Help window look for'net commands'.
