Installing ADO on Win9x/PWS

I have talked at length about installing ASP, but the version of ADO that comes with this older ASP is out of date and will need updating. ADO is a part of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). There have been several different versions of ADO to date, and it's important that you have an up to date one. The version numbering of MDAC reflects the version numbering of ADO, so MDAC 2.0 contains ADO 2.0 etc. The examples in this book require you to have ADO 2.5 for all the examples to work, but to get through most of them you will need at least ADO 2.0 or a more recent version. Now PWS 4.0 (aka the NT Option Pack 4.0) and Windows 98 only come with ADO 1.5. You can get more updated versions from Office 2000, IE5 or Visual Studio 6.0, but if you don't have one of these, and haven't downloaded the MDAC separately, then you will need to do so.

The MDAC service packs are available at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm.

Installing ADO

1.    Go to http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm and then download the most recent version of MDAC.

2.    Run the mdac_typ.exe and after it has installed a few bits and pieces you will get to the following screen to begin setup:

3.    Press Continue and you get to the following screen:

4.    Click the large button to finish ADO's installation.

That's all there is to it.
