IE Connects to Internet Even When Page is Local on PWS
After some installs, IE4 wants to connect to the Interneteven when the page is sitting locally on PWS. This defeats one of the main advantages of PWS – the ability to work off-line. I observe this problem only in IE, not Netscape, and more frequently from students that install PWS fromVID 6 CDs.
Solution 1
You can control how IE looks for pages. For IE 3 go to View | Internet Options | Connection. Thechoices are Connect to the Internet using a modemand Connect to the Internet using Local Area Network.Once the LAN option is selected IE will no longer dial-up to find a page. However, whenever you do want to access a page by dial-up, you will have to doso by connecting before requesting the page. IE 4 and 5 have the same featureunder Tools | Connections– select the option for Never dial a connection.
Solution 2 (a variant of solution 1)
Install a network card as well as the modem. The NIC canjust have a BNC terminator on it; it does not have to be physically attached toanything. Bind TCP/IP to the NIC card. Then set IE to connect by LAN. However, like solution 3, you still have to dial manually when you want the Internet.
Solution 3
Use the URL /MySite/MyPage.ASP.If you just use MySite/MyPage.aspor MyPage.asp, IE connects tothe Internet just in case the page is not found locally.
Solution 4
When IE displays the dial-up connection screen, don't click Cancel or close the window. Just press Alt+Tab or click on the IE window tochange the focus back to IE.
Loss of FTP Message
If PWS version 1 is installed and then you install PWS version4, you get a message "The Microsoft FTP service isno longer supported. If you click OK to continue the installation, FTP will beremoved. Otherwise click Cancel to exit setup." This means you willlose the server-side FTP capability which was part of PWS 1 but not PWS 4. This is not a problem since you can still transfer files by using FrontPage with File | Publish, or youcan install FTP software such as WS_FTP from www.Ipswitch.com.
