Download
The Personal Web Server download used to be offered as part of an NT 4 option pack but Microsoft no longer offers the Windows NT 4 option pack download that included the Personal Web Server. If you find a copy of it somewhere else, you can use the download install instructions at the end of this page. Microsoft's old download page for this option pack now redirects to a page about installing the NT option pack on an MCS Cluster Server. Not exactly what you were looking for.
The fact that it was the NT 4 option pack where you were to get PWS to install on Win 9x gave many students a hard time believing that one possible technique to install PWS was to run the NT Option Pack on their Windows 9x machines. But it does work and is the recommended method. If you have the Option pack.
Which Source to Use?
I have found that students have the fewest problems when installing PWS on Win98 from the Win98 CD. The second least-problematic source seems to be the NT download which is good for Win95 as well as Win98. Another strategy with minimum complaints has been the installation from NT 4 Option pack onto NT workstation. Folks that are installing from VID and FrontPage CD-ROMs seem to have the most problems. I also suggest that if students are considering moving from Win95 to Win98 or WinNT, they do so prior to attempting to install PWS.
Install Steps for PWS From Win98CD to Windows98
This is the safest option for installing PWS, in my experience, but is only possible if using Win98. The steps are as follows:
1. Ensure that the Windows 98 CD is in the drive.
2. Go to Start | Run…
3. Type x:\add-ons\pws\setup.exe where x: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
4. You will be greeted with a splash screen similar to this:
5.
For most users, the typical install will work fine. If you
choose to do a custom install, then ensure that the following components are
selected:
Common Program Files
MDAC 1.5
Personal Web Server
Transaction Server
6. You will then be prompted for your default web publishing home directory.
7. Leave the default install folder as it is for Transaction Server. The installation program will install the required files. Reboot your computer and it's all done.
Install Steps Using Downloaded NT Option Pack onto Win95
This is the best option for Win95. However, keep in mind that a much higher percentage of my students have had problems with PWS on Win95 then PWS on Win98. IF you are considering upgrading to Win98 I suggest you do it prior to installing PWS.
1. Close all applications. 2. Download WinNT Option Pack for Win95 from using the link at the bottom of the page.
3. Select Option 1 of the the Download options, and then on the next page select the operating system you are running on. On the next page click on download.exe for the site nearest to you.
4. Save the program to disk. 5. Select Start|Run on download.exe and the wizard will first ask you to agree to the licensing terms, and then present you with the following screen:
6. Choose to download only, as, if the install option quits halfway through, it can possibly mess up your machine's configuration.
7. Click Next and choose x86: Windows 95 for the operating system and click Next.
8. Choose the Typical Installation and click Next.
9. Choose a location on your hard drive of where to download the pack to, and click Next.
10. Choose a location from where to download the pack.
11. Accept the verification certificate that appears and then the option pack will download.
12. Finally Start | Run the newly downloaded setup.exe and the setup is then same as the previous install from step 4.
